Creative Cooking

I really like to cook; especially if I don't have to follow a recipe!  I like to cook creatively and transform what I have on hand into something delicious (okay it is not always delicious but my track record has improved greatly over time).  I do follow recipes, especially for baking, but often like to add my own flair and experimentation with add-ins and seasonings.  A few of my friends marvel at the way I bravely add things in or put things together, but mostly it is experimentation and finding what works and what doesn't.

My dad's sister is an excellent gourmet cook and I like to think that my desire to create in the kitchen stems from her.  Lately I have been making her curry dip constantly, so good (mayo, shredded sharp cheddar, diced green onions, diced black olives, and curry powder- chill over night and serve with crackers; I am not going to tell you the measurements, experiment and have fun tweaking!

So on this blog you will sometimes see creative cooking ideas.  I really love to stretch our food budget by cooking this way as well.  For example turning leftovers into another dish all together or combining stray ingredients into a filling soup.  I also like to cook things homemade to make them healthier.  Although a creative experiment with ketchup this summer made me appreciate buying it from the store!

Having a garden the last two years has helped a great deal to cook creatively while stretching the budget.  I love cooking with fresh herbs.  I experimented with dehydrating hot peppers this year (picture an all day long affair, with burning fingers from the spiciness, and a house that made our eyes water- next investment, a dehydrator and listening when hubby says to wear gloves)!
